The formatting options of an object can be modified from its Properties dialog bar.  The properties shown correspond to the item that is highlighted in the Navigation Bar.

Once the desired object is selected, its properties can be changed (including formatting properties like font and background) using the Font group, under the Home tab.  In addition, fragments of text can be selected and formatting attributes applied using commands from the "Font" toolbar:
